Local 5th Graders Receive 'Gifted Hands' book from OFTC's Rotaract Club
    02/08/21

Dublin, Ga. (OFTC) --Every fifth-grade student within the city, county and private schools in Laurens County received the book Gifted Hands by Dr. Ben Carson from Oconee Fall Line Technical College’s (OFTC) Rotaract Club, Monday, February 8.

This project has been a priority of the College’s Rotaract Club for five years and is sponsored by the Dublin Rotary Club who purchases the books.

"Dr. Carson’s story is inspiring for anyone but especially these young fifth grade students,” shared Janet Smith, OFTC’s Director of Student Life and Rotaract Club Advisor. “His story shows the type of perseverance and support that is required to rise above your circumstances, which is a message we all need at times.”

When the Rotaract Club decided to take on this project a few years ago, they chose the book Gifted Hands because of its message, Smith added. “By exposing students to a story of the rewards of discipline, we increase the likelihood that our community fifth graders will not only come to understand the importance of reading and writing but will also be encouraged to understand that regardless of their circumstances they can achieve their goals and follow their dreams.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rotaract Club was not able to visit each class individually as in years past to distribute the books. However, they recorded a special video to be distributed to the students, encouraging them to watch the Dr. Carson video where he talks about the type of perseverance it takes to never give up and follow one's dreams and read the book.

This year, students were also given a bookmark sponsored by Southern Printing, and those who read the book and complete a one-page book report will have an opportunity to win a $50 gift card from the Dublin Rotary Club.

Participating fifth grade classes were from Northwest Laurens Elementary, Trinity Christian, Dublin Middle School, Southwest Laurens Elementary and East Laurens Elementary.
