Industrial Workplace Fundamentals Student Completers Honored at OFTC Ceremony

DUBLIN, Ga., (OFTC) --In November, Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) offered a five-week Industrial Workplace Fundamentals (IWF) course in Dublin designed to prepare individuals to enter the workforce for a career in manufacturing.

On Tuesday, January 29, the first cohort of IWF student completers were honored during a ceremony held on the College’s Dublin Campus.

During the course, students met Monday through Thursday and completed training and requirements to receive certifications in OSHA 10-Hour General Industry safety training, Medic First Aid, Forklift Safety, Northstar Digital Literacy, a basic mastery of Microsoft Computer programs, and National Work Readiness, a soft skills and work ethics training.

“In addition to these certifications, students participated in half-day courses in some of OFTC’s Trades and Industry programs,” shared Kim David, OFTC’s VP of Business & Industry and Economic Development. “They also completed training lessons on soft skills, work ethics, resume and interview prep, and preparation for the Work Keys exam,” an assessment which measures foundational skills required for success in the workplace according to act.org.

IWF students also toured several local industries including Kencoa–Eastman, Erdrich, and Farmers Furniture and learned of specific qualities and skills these companies look for when hiring future employees.

During the completion ceremony, each student received the appropriate tools to go to work in a light manufacturing or industrial environment: a polo shirt, steel toed work boots, safety eyewear, safety gloves, hearing and head protection. In addition, students received a portfolio to show their certification cards, completion certificate, and resume to present to future employers.

OFTC plans to continue offering the IWF program, a collaborative effort between the College’s Business & Industry, Economic Development, Adult Ed and Trades & Industry divisions, each semester at alternating OFTC campuses.

Those interested in participating or learning more about the program can contact OFTC’s Adult Education department at 478-274-7848 or the Continuing Education department at 478-275-5988.
